Why You’ll Love Refugio Amazonas
- Wired Amazon Activities – Wired Amazon is our science program. From discovering a new species to learning about Harpy Eagle behavior, Refugio Amazonas guests can join the Wired Amazon team and participate in innovative research that is advancing our knowledge of the Amazon Rainforest. Each month (on average) a guest discovers a new species for science. Read more about Wired Amazon activities.
- Discover a new species – Join a member of the Wired Amazon team and help them collect insects in the light trap that will be genetically sequenced. Each month, a lucky visitor discovers a new species of Tiger Moth, Scorpion Wasp, or Leaf Hopper, which is new to science.
- Trap cameras- Set up the hidden cameras on the trails near the lodge and download photos of wildlife from the last few days to help scientists discover what is present in our 288-kilometer trail experiment.
- Aerobotany- Aerobotany is where centuries-old classical field biology and 21st-century cutting-edge technology come together, in the middle of the spectacularly diverse and little-explored Amazon Rainforest. Join our resident Aerobotanist to fly drones over the canopy and sort the photos.
- Macaw Clay Lick – Take a boat trip to the Chuncho Clay Lick within the Tambopata National Reserve to see the Macaws come down to eat clay on clear mornings.
- Canopy Tower– Our 30-meter observation tower offers spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest. You will have a good chance of spotting Toucans, Parrots, Macaws, or mixed flocks of birds.

The trip
Refugio Amazonas requires at least two hours of travel. To begin your tour of the rainforest, take a quick plane trip from Lima or Cuzco to the Amazon city of Puerto Maldonado, in southeastern Peru. After we meet you at the airport, we’ll take you on a one-hour road trip, followed by a leisurely 1-hour boat ride down the Tambopata River, to reach our oasis in the middle of the forest.
By air
The first step on your trip to Tambopata includes a plane trip from Lima or Cuzco. Flights from Lima depart from the national terminal of the Jorge Chávez airport. The trip lasts approximately two hours. Most flights stop in Cuzco before continuing to Puerto Maldonado. Flights from Cusco depart from the national terminal of the Velasco Astete airport. The trip lasts about 45 minutes.
By land
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our guides will greet you and take you to a waiting vehicle. We will take a short trip to our operations office in Puerto Maldonado, where we will ask you to store any luggage you do not need. Luggage is transported by hand in several stages of the long-distance journey, so we ask that you limit its weight to 15 kilos (32 pounds per piece). You can pack the bags separately and leave them safely in our offices in Puerto Maldonado on the first day so that we do not carry them unnecessarily. Your luggage will be waiting for you at the airport on the day of your departure. After taking care of your luggage, we take a 1-hour bus trip to the river port of Philadelphia.
By the river
In Philadelphia, we board long, sturdy canoes equipped with outboard motors and river down to Refugio Amazonas. The 1-hour boat trip is pleasant, and often includes our first sightings of macaws, herons, caimans, and capybaras. Once the boat arrives at the lodge dock, you will have officially arrived in the wild jungles of Tambopata!
Once you arrive
Access to our lodges involves climbing a ladder with about 70 to 90 steps. The number of steps will vary depending on the season, rainy or dry, due to the fluctuation of the river. These steps are considered a medium level of effort. It usually takes about fifteen minutes on foot to reach the lodge.
Rainforest Expeditions Departures from the airport (Puerto Maldonado to Lodge) *:
Two daily departures at 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Rainforest Expeditions returns to the airport (Lodge to Puerto Maldonado) *:
Two daily departures at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
** Do not take LATAM 2081 or LATAM 2077 as they do not match our transfers to the lodge. We do not recommend arriving or leaving Puerto Maldonado by bus, as the road is not safe **
