Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO TO TRAIL HEAD AND BEYOND TINKO
At 7:30 a.m. in the morning, we will pick you up by private vehicle from your hotel and travel for one hour to “Tarawasi” the Inca remains of Limatambo at 2,800 meters. We will visit this interesting site adorned with sophisticated stone of the known as cellular style. This site is located in a low valley that enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. We will have the opportunity to walk and stretch our legs before continuing by car through this canyon on a small dirt road that leads to Tomacalla and a little beyond to our trailhead. After unloading our vehicle, we will watch the muleteers pack our horses while enjoying a picnic lunch that will provide the necessary energy for a 4-hour afternoon hike, to find our camp (3,780 meters) set up in TINKO. at 3,600 meters, on the way to the “Tocto” pass. It’s time to organize our tent and relax with a cup of hot coca tea before enjoying dinner and settling in for the night. Total distance 11Km in 4 hours.
DAY 2: TREK TINKO-CANYON OF THE CONDOR- THE TOCTO PASS – MINA WASI
A warm cup of coca tea or coffee brought to your tent will help us wake up to start a beautiful day of hiking in the mountains. After a nutritious breakfast, we will walk through the “Cóndor Canyon” where we can often observe condors flying over our heads capturing the warm morning winds to gain altitude and fly in search of food. We gain altitude while enjoying this natural scenery to reach the Tocto pass (4,850 meters) to enjoy the outstanding views of the snowy peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range. A short break to take pictures of the overwhelming views from this magnificent high pass and we will begin our descent to our lunch spot not far away in a pleasant protected area. After lunch, we will continue descending to our camp known for having the most spectacular views of the Sacred Salkantay Mountain. We will descend carefully following a steep path that will take us to “Mina Wasi” at 4,300 meters, on the way we can normally observe Llamas, Alpacas and cattle grazing on the high plateau. We should arrive at our camp in the mid-afternoon to find a warm cup of Coca or regular tea, cookies and crackers to tie us over until dinner is ready. Tonight we will sleep under the spectacular sacred mountain of Salkantay. Total distance 12 Km in 6 hours.
DAY 3: TREK MINA WASI TO PAUCARCANCHA
Now accustomed to a cup of hot tea in our tents, we enjoy getting up early to start another magnificent day of descent and easy hiking. After a hearty breakfast, we will follow the trail to the small farming community of “Pampaccahuana”. Along the way you will enjoy watching the peasants living and working the land in a similar way to how their Inca ancestors did centuries ago. Children dressed in their traditional wool ponchos will look at you and greet you with curiosity as you pass by or from afar. We will have a brief visit to their local primary school and have the opportunity to donate any school supplies you wish to give before following a path next to an original stone Inca water channel that is used for irrigation even today. A picnic on the way before continuing down to our camp in “Paucarcancha”; the environment will become more lush as we descend and observe that the water from the canal above becomes a torrent of white water on its way to the Urubamba River and then to the mighty Amazon east of the Andes. We arrived at our camp next to “Paucarcancha”: a set of well-restored Inca remains. This time we camp in a private camp of a local farmer with access to hot showers and bathrooms with indoor plumbing. We will have time to explore this interesting site at the intersection of two valleys that is believed to be an Inca administrative site for the people living in the area and a checkpoint for people traveling to Machu Picchu. A delicious dinner and after-dinner conversation before settling in for the night. Total distance 13 Km in 6 hours.
DAY 4: TREK PAUCARCANCHA TO CAMP KM 82
Easy and relaxed wake up before joining the group for breakfast. After that, we will begin another descending day, this time on part of the classic Inca trail but in the opposite direction. We will walk along the trail passing cornfields following the stream before meeting a large number of hikers going in front of us, as we descend into the Urubamba River valley. We will visit a large Inca settlement called “Patallacta” before arriving at our lunch spot, this time in the Urubamba River Valley. After lunch, we follow the trail upstream to our final camp at Km 82 camp. We will have time to rest and recover from the hike before the Inca Trail hike and the visit to Machu Picchu the next day. We will camp with the comfort of bathrooms, hot showers and a rustic wood-burning sauna available.
You will participate in the process of cooking a healthy, exotic and delicious Pachamanca dinner, cooked in the earth with hot stones. Total distance 13 Km in 6 hours.
