The Lost Sister City Of Machu Picchu "Chokequirau"



The majesty of Chokequirau is unparalleled because it is perched on a mountain top overlooking the giant Apurimac River Canyon. Recent clean up of this fascinating archaeological site has brought the world´s attention to this lost city of the Incas. The difficulty in getting to it has kept most people from visiting this spectacular site, but a bit of determination and a spirit of adventure will make it possible to conquer the challenge.

DAY 1

Early morning departure from Cusco in our private transportation for an all day ride to the Town of Cachora. On the way you'll visit the complex of Tarawasi and have a picnic lunch, after lunch we drive to the Cunyac bridge where we cross the mighty Apurimac River. We continue on the paved road until we reach a detour and get on an unpaved road that will take us to Cachora. Overnight camp nearby the village of San Pedro de Cachora. L, D.

DAY 2

We will meet our crew and pack animals. As we have our breakfast, the loads will be packed on mules to iniciate our trek. We will trek for a short time on a gentle trail to later continue down a winding trail with spectacular views of the magnificent Canyon of the Apurimac River. A picnic lunch is served half way down to the River and we will notice the environment change to a warmer and more tropical climate as we get lower. We approach the bottom of the Canyon, cross the Apurimac River by way of hanging bridge to ascend for a short time to our campsite at Rosalina Beach. B,L,D.

DAY 3

A energetic breakfast will prepare us for this demanding day. Today we trek up the winding trail, all the way to Chokequirau ruins, (Gold Cradle) perched 1800 meters above the Apurimac River. We arrive in the mid afternoon, your camp will be ready at designated areas near the ruins by the time we arrive, we get settled and have the balance of the day to explore this unique archaeological site. DAY 4

After a nutrious breakfast we begin our short descend to the Apurimac River bridge, we cross to the other side and begin ascending on the trail back to Cachora where the bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. Arrive in Cusco in the evening and transfer to your hotel. B,L.

  • All meals marked as B,L,D at the end of each day in the itinerary.
  • Service of local official guides.
  • Service of camp staff: Cook, assistants, porters.
  • All group camping and cooking equipment: Passenger tents based in double occupancy. Dinning tent with tables, silverware and chairs. Toilet tent with biodegradable chemical toilet.

Price Does Not Include:
International airfare, internal flights, any meals not specified after each itinerary day, airport departures taxes, optional tipping or gratuities to staff, additional hotel nights that may be necessitated by airline schedule changes or other factors, expenses such as medical immunizations (if any), travel insurance, and other expenses of a personal nature (liquor, laundry, and so on.) Trip member must provide sleeping bag. (please note that sleeping bags can also be rented for $4 per day).
